Floyd remember Barrett

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour is to release three new tracks in tribute to former band member and friend Syd Barrett, he has announced.
Gilmour confirmed details of his "Arnold Layne" single on his official website, dedicating the release to Barrett, who died this summer of pancreatic cancer.
The material consists of an acoustic take on "Dark Globe", plus two versions of Pink Floyd's first ever single, "Arnold Layne", all recorded at Gilmour's shows earlier this year at London's Royal Albert Hall.
One features David Bowie on vocals and the other Richard Wright from Pink Floyd. Both tracks were initially written by Barrett.
The songs will all be available to download from Christmas Day but will also be released to shops in December.
Meanwhile, it was revealed last week that Barrett left around £1.2 million to his family in his will. He died in July at the age of 60.

Darkness lead singer Hawkins quits band

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Singer Justin Hawkins has left British glam-revival band the Darkness to continue his drug rehabilitation and work on a solo album, telling the Sun newspaper Wednesday that "it's time for me to move on."

He added: "It would be damaging to my recovery to stay on. I'm not blaming the band for my problem -- I am an addict."

The remaining band members wrote on the Darkness message board (http://www.thedarknessrock.com): "We ... are still in total shock and can't say at this stage what the future holds. You will hear from us, once we know what we want to do."

The group burst onto the worldwide stage with its 2004 debut, "Permission To Land," which has sold 698,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But last year's "One Way Ticket to Hell ... And Back" fizzled here, selling 91,000 copies to date.

In August, Hawkins entered rehab; at the time, the band insisted it would hit the studio as soon as he was well, and it denied rumours that it had been dropped by Atlantic Records.

A "new" album of Beatles music

A new Beatles Album is not something I thought I would see
but having the backing of Ringo and Paul also Yoko
and Olivia Harrison with producer George Martin
cutting the album I cannot wait to hear it

LONDON (Reuters) - A "new" album of Beatles music mixed by their legendary producer George Martin and described as a new "way of reliving the whole Beatles musical lifespan", will be released in November.

EMI Music and Apple Corps Ltd said on Tuesday that Martin and his son Giles began work on the album, called "Love", after getting permission from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison representing
John Lennon and George Harrison.

The music has already been used as the soundtrack to the theatrical Cirque du Soleil show called "Love".

"This music was designed for the Love show in Las Vegas but in doing so we've created a new Beatles album," George Martin said in a statement.
"The Beatles always looked for other ways of expressing themselves and this is another step forward for them.

"What people will be hearing on the album is a new experience, a way of re-living the whole Beatles musical lifespan in a very condensed period."

The Martins worked from the original master tapes from the Abbey Road studios to produce a medley of Beatles music by remixing favourite songs, such as Harrison's "Within You Without You" being played to the drum-track of "Tomorrow Never Knows."

EMI Music, part of EMI Group Plc, and Apple Corps Ltd., the company that administers The Beatles' interests, said the album would be released world-wide in November. Additional information such as the track listing will be released later.

APPLE could be forced to share its iTunes technology so that rivals can sell music to iPod owners, it has emerged.

The French parliament has passed a law which aims to tackle claims that its iPod and iTunes systems are operating as an unfair monopoly.

Apple's bestselling MP3 player includes a coding system which means it willl play only songs downloaded through the company's iTunes service for 79p for a track or 7.90 uk pound for an album.

However, the French law would require Apple and other digital music services to volunteer these codes to all MP3 manufacturers. opening the download market to rivals.

January's Top 10 Free Electronic Music Downloads Announced

by Eric Hamilton

Free Music Downloads is a blog that posts electronic music tracks regularly. The primary goal is to provide exposure to deserving independent artists.

(PRWEB) February 2, 2005 -- Free Music Downloads is an mp3 blog for electronic music fans, established by Dilvie (an electronic music producer) January 5, 2005. It quickly attracted hundreds of subscribers (via the free podcast feed), and tens of thousands of visitors. All of the music posted is available for free download, and it's all legal. The music spans a wide variety of electronic music genres, including house, breakbeat, drum n bass, ambient, jazz, soul, and catchy synthpop.

Musicians supply free mp3's primarily as a promotional tool. They realize that the best way to gain new fans is to be heard, and the Internet is a great way to connect with an audience, even for artists with limited resources.

There are two top ten lists, which will be published monthly. The first is an all-time list, which represents the most popular music, counting the complete history of the site. The second is a list of the most popular tracks during the last week of the month, designed to help new artists break into the all-time chart.

The top ten lists are a measure of song popularity, based on a variety of factors, including click counts and the popularity of individual item pages. The majority of the blog subscribers use iPodder to automatically fetch new tracks on a daily basis. Many other users subscribe from one of many RSS syndication points on other websites. In other words, its likely that most people visiting the song pages have already heard the song, and are there looking for additional information about the artist.

No.1 Band Online Community

No.1 Band Online Community is Revolutionizing the Music Industry

by Daryl H. Bryant

Now bands and musicians can promote themselves online, better than ever before. No.1 Band has created an online community that is revolutionizing the music industry. No.1 Band allows bands to register for free, promote their band, upload pictures, audio and video, list upcoming events, create band member biographies, interact with fans and sell products such as CDs, t-shirts, band equipment and much more.

A portfolio on No.1 Band is not any ordinary portfolio. No.1 Band gives their members a multi-page website that allows bands and venues to promote themselves anyway they choose. When a member registers they choose a username; with this username their website can be viewed simply by going to
www.number1band.com/username.

The most important feature of No.1 Band, which separates them from their competition, is the store front that the band and venue receive when they register as a member of the No.1 Band community. The band and venue can add products directly to their No.1 Band website, allowing them to sell and manage an online store of their own. Any money made by selling these products is paid back to the member, minus a small transaction fee.

No. 1 Band is also raising the bar in one other major way. They are putting their members against one another in a grueling battle for ultimate website supremacy. No.1 Band is holding monthly Battle of the Band contests directly on their website. If a band can outlast and outshine the rest, then they will have earned the right to be known as No.1 Band's Arena Grand Champion and will have their music played directly on the homepage of the No.1 Band website for one month.

The first winner of The Arena writes, “Thanks so much for choosing our songs. The site looks and sounds great! Keep it up!” – Ditch (Broken Heart Auto League)

A $1 million Web idea, one pixel at a time

British man dreams up unique way to finance university

Some of the advertisers first bought spots on the page as a lark, only to discover they were receiving significant Web hits.

To get your bit of the action with Pixel Marketing. Pixmeup has setup a website that you can buy pixels for as little as $25 show others how to adverting on your page and get paid see how CLICK HERE

This is pixel mania and it is taking the world by storm

LONDON - If you have an envious streak, you probably shouldn't read this.
Because chances are,

Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student from a small town in England, is cleverer than you. And he is proving it by earning a cool million dollars in four months on the Internet.

Selling porn? Dealing prescription drugs? Nope. All he sells are pixels, the tiny dots on the screen that appear when you call up his home page.

He had the brainstorm for his million dollar home page, called, logically enough, http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/, while lying in bed thinking out how he would pay for university

The idea: turn his home page into a billboard made up of a million dots, and sell them for a dollar a dot to anyone who wants to put up their logo. A 10 by 10 dot square, roughly the size of a letter of type, costs $100.

He sold a few to his brothers and some friends, and when he had made $1,000, he issued a press release.

That was picked up by the news media, spread around the Internet, and soon advertisers for everything from dating sites to casinos to real estate agents to The Times of London were putting up real cash for pixels, with links to their own sites.

So far they have bought up 911,800 pixels. Tew's home page now looks like an online Times Square, festooned with a multi-coloured confetti of ads.

"All the money's kind of sitting in a bank account," Tew told Reuters from his home in Wiltshire, southwest England. "I've treated myself to a car. I've only just passed my driving test so I've bought myself a little black mini."

The site features testimonials from advertisers, some of whom bought spots as a lark, only to discover that they were receiving actual valuable Web hits for a fraction of the cost of traditional Internet advertising.

Meanwhile Tew has had to juggle running the site with his first term at university, where he is studying business.

It's been quite a difficulty trying to balance going to lectures and doing the site," he said.

But he may not have to study for long. Job offers have been coming in from Internet companies impressed by a young man who managed to figure out an original way to make money online.

"I didn't expect it to happen like that," Tew said. "To have the job offers and approaches from investors — the whole thing is kind of surreal. I'm still in a state of disbelief."
