Ozzy Osbourne has confirmed details of his first solo album in six years.

"Black Rain" is out next month and was recorded in his studio at home in Los Angeles with his touring band of Zakk Wylde, Blasko and Mike Bordin.

Amongst the album tracks are "I Don't Wanna Stop", "Not Going Away", "Civilize The Universe", "Trap Door", "Thank God For The Almighty Dollar" and "Black Rain".

The former Black Sabbath legend has also revealed that "Black Rain" is the first LP in his career to be recorded completely sober.

He told Billbaord: "I thought I'd never write again without any stimulation. But you know what? Instead of picking of the bottle I just got honest and said, "I don't want life to go (to pieces)."

"Black Rain" is due out on May 22.

Police: New album?

The Police are considering making a new album, as they prepare to embark on their enormous comeback world tour.

Andy Summers, the band's guitarist, revealed the news in London earlier this week, and said they were hoping to play "a couple of new songs" at the live shows.

Summers was asked about the possibility of a new Police album, their first in almost 15 years, at the launch of his memoirs "One Train Later" yesterday.

He explained: "If we do well with these concerts we may well make a sixth album. I can't see why not."

Speaking about the band's rehearsals, which follow their official reunion performance at the Grammys earlier this year, Summers confirmed the group had been having fun.

"We've been jamming acoustically lately and we've been really enjoying it. We'll be playing a couple of new songs at the shows in the summer", he said.

The Police play the first of their comeback dates in Vancouver at the end of May before appearing at the following UK shows later in the year:

Stones add London show

The Rolling Stones have confirmed another show in London as part of the latest leg of their "A Bigger Bang" world tour.

Mick Jagger and co last week announced plans to play across Europe this summer, including a headlining show at the Isle Of Wight Festival in June.

They have now added a second concert at the O2 Dome in August, bringing their tour to a total of 28 gigs across Europe.

Tickets for the London dates go on-sale this Friday, although they are already on-sale to members of The Rolling Stones fanclub.

Download announces more bands

Preparing for a weekend of exceptional music and entertainment, Download Festival announces five more incredible bands to the line-up. Having only announced one third of the line up so far, the first festival of the year looks set to be a phenomenal weekend of live music.

Festival organisers are excited to announce the inclusion of Within Temptation, Stone Sour, Unearth, Chimaira and Job For A Cowboy to the bill. Taking place on 8, 9, 10 June, Download Festival have already announced My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and Iron Maiden as this year’s headliners, and as always are striving to improve the Donington Park facilities year on year. Festival organisers are currently looking not only to have more entertainment on site than ever, but are also aiming to implement new initiatives to make the festival greener.

Within Temptation are Holland’s biggest selling musical export, and one of the fastest growing rock acts internationally. Seen as Europe’s hottest new superstars, they have sold over one million units worldwide. Their fourth album, 'The Heart Of Everything’ has been met with critical and commercial praise, and 2007 looks set to be their most successful year yet. Headed up by the beautiful Sharon Den Adel, their combination of her stunning vocals, and the bands masterful musicianship make this six piece ensemble a Download Festival must see.

American melodic rock band Stone Sour were founded by Corey Taylor of Slipknot. Their double Grammy nominated debut album 'Cellar Falls’ went Gold in the US, while their second album 'Come What(Ever) May’ peaked at number 4 in the US Billboard Chart. Having recently sold out their UK tour, this will be the third time that Stone Sour have played Download Festival.

Police Special Announcement

The Police will hold a press conference next week, where they will make a "special announcement", it has been confirmed.

Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are expected to confirm news of their reformation at the gathering.

Taking place at the famed Whisky A Go Go club in West Hollywood, California, the conference comes a day after the band are scheduled to appear at The Grammys.

Speculation has been rife for some months that The Police will embark on a full world tour this year, 30 years since "Roxanne" broke the band in America.

Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are understood to have been rehearsing at Lions Gate Studios in Vancouver in recent weeks.

On February 12, 20 Sting.com legacy members will be able attend The Police Rehearsals - to commemorate The Police's 30th anniversary. Sting.com have secured credentials so that 20 legacy members can be there to attend this historic event which will take place late morning at the famous Whisky A Go Go on Sunset Boulevard.

U2 defy "scam"

U2 have moved to distance themselves from a series of adverts promoting non-existent live shows by the band in Europe.

The group completed their enormous "Vertigo" world tour in Hawaii at the end of 2006, and are now understood to be taking a break in preparation for their new LP.

However, the Irish rockers have been contacted about apparent concerts in 2007, which appear to have been erroneously advertised.

A statement on www.u2.com reads: "Some fans have been in touch to let us know of adverts appearing in the press offering tickets for U2 shows in London and Paris this year.

"Take it from us, these adverts are a scam - there are no live plans for this year. Do not buy tickets for U2 shows unless you've read it here first."

Velvet-voiced singer and longtime community activist

Lou Rawls, 72, January 6 in Los Angeles. His trademark song "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," was released in 1976 and exemplifies the classic "Philadelphia Sound." Rawls recorded 52 albums in a career that spanned nearly five decades and won Grammy Awards for hits "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)," "Natural Man" and "Lady Love." He also played a major role in United Negro College Fund telethons in the '80s that raised more than $200 million and appeared in 18 movies and 16 TV series.

WILSON PICKETT

Soul/R&B legend Wilson Pickett, 64, January 19 in Virginia. In 1965, Pickett signed a solo deal with Atlantic, scoring a No. 21 pop hit with "In the Midnight Hour," which he co-wrote with legendary sessions musician Steve Cropper. A slew of late '60s R&B/soul hits followed, five of which reached No. 1 on The Billboard R&B charts. Pickett was a 1991 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His last studio album, "It's Harder Now," (1999) won W.C. Handy Awards for soul/blues album of the year and comeback album of the year, and Pickett himself was named soul/blues male artist of the year.

GENE MCFADDEN

R&B vocalist/songwriter Gene McFadden, 56, January 27 in Philadelphia. McFadden was half of the Philly soul duo the Epsilons with John Whitehead. As McFadden & Whitehead, the pair's best-known song, "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," reached No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart and No. 13 on The Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. The duo also wrote several hits performed by others, including the O'Jays' "Back Stabbers" and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "Wake Up Everybody."

JAMES YANCEY AKA J DILLA

Rapper/producer James Yancey aka J Dilla, 32, February10 in Los Angeles. Since forming the rap trio Slum Village in the late '90s with MCs Baatin and T3, J Dilla worked closely with such artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, Common and the Pharcyde. J Dilla later left the group to pursue a solo career. Before his passing, he had been working on "The Shining," which was released in August on BBE Records.

ALI FARKA TOURE

Africa's best-known blues singer and guitarist Ali Farka Toure, in his late 60s, March 7 in Mali. After emerging on the global scene with a bluesy, self-titled 1988 release, Toure won a best world music album Grammy Award for his 1994 release "Talking Timbuktu." The album stayed at No.1 on Billboard's Top World Music chart for 16 weeks. His World Circuit recording with countryman Toumani Diabate, "In the Heart of the Moon," won Toure a second Grammy in February 2006.

LUMUMBA CARSON AKA PROFESSOR X

Rapper Lumumba Carson aka Professor X, 49, March 17 in New York. The Brooklyn MC was best-known for his role with the '90s hip-hop group the X-Clan. The group's second and final album, "Xodus," reached No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 1992.

GENE PITNEY

Singer/songwriter Gene Pitney, 65, April 5 in Wales. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pitney peaked on The Billboard pop singles chart at No. 2 with "Only Love Can Break a Heart" in 1962. Pitney also had some success as a country singer, and in 1990, he scored his first U.K. No. 1 single with the Marc Almond duet "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart."

JUNE POINTER

Pointer Sisters singer, June Pointer, 52, April 11 in Los Angeles. As part of the Grammy-winning quartet, which also featured sisters Ruth, Anita and Bonnie, the Pointer Sisters are best-known for a string of '70s and '80s R&B/pop hits that included "He's So Shy," "Slow Hand" and "Fire."

DESHAUN HOLTON aka PROOF

Rap star Deshaun Holton aka Proof, 32, April 11 in Detroit. Proof helped build the Detroit scene by hosting rap battles at the Hip Hop Shop. Proof was later a valued member of the group D12 led by rapper Eminem. "Without Proof there would be no Eminem, no Slim Shady, no D12," Eminem said.

GRANT MCLENNAN

Go-Betweens' principal Grant McLennan, 48, May 6 in Brisbane, Australia. With longtime partner Robert Forster, McLennan led the Go-Betweens to critical, if not commercial, success. After the band split in 1989, McLennan released four solo albums. The Go-Betweens reunited in 2000 for the acclaimed album "The Friends of Rachel Worth."

HILTON RUIZ

Jazzman Hilton Ruiz, 54, June 6 in New Orleans. One of the most accomplished pianists in the contemporary Latin jazz world, Ruiz was as versatile with bop and stride as with Afro-Cuban music. Aside from countless collaborative albums with the likes of Tito Puente, Freddie Hubbard and Mongo Santamaria, Ruiz also released more than 20 solo albums.

BILLY PRESTON

Renowned soul musician Billy Preston, 59, June 6 in Scottsdale, Ariz. In addition to his healthy Grammy-winning solo career, Preston collaborated and toured with superstars such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison and Aretha Franklin. Preston recorded 20 solo albums and had two No. 1 songs, "Will It Go Around in Circles" in 1973 and "Nothing from Nothing" in 1974, on The Billboard Hot 100. He also wrote "You Are So Beautiful," made famous by singer Joe Cocker.

JOHNNY JENKINS

Guitar legend Johnny Jenkins, 67, June 26 in Macon, Ga. Jenkins worked with Otis Redding in the early '60s and influenced Jimi Hendrix through his acrobatic style. His last two albums, in 2001 and 2003, were released by Mean Old World Records.

ROGER 'SYD' BARRETT

Enigmatic Pink Floyd co-founder and reclusive cult hero Roger "Syd" Barrett, 60, July 7 in Cambridge, England. Starting with Pink Floyd's 1967 debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," Barrett blended elements of pop and psychedelia in ways that would influence generations of rock acts. Leaving Pink Floyd in 1968 after a drug-influenced mental decline, Barrett released two beloved solo albums in 1970, "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett." Barrett's music can also be heard on the 1993 boxed set "Crazy Diamond."

MILAN B. WILLIAMS

R&B/funk keyboard player, Milan B. Williams, 58, July 9 in Houston. As a founding member of the Commodores, Williams helped the band achieve their first hit with the synthesizer-pumped 1974 instrumental "Machine Gun," which he wrote. The group went on to score seven No. 1 R&B hits--two of which, "Three Times a Lady" and "Still," also notched No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Pianist Bill Miller, 91, July 17 in Montreal. Miller was Frank Sinatra's pianist for nearly 50 years until the singer's last performance in 1995. He also played with such giants as Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Charlie Barnet.

JESSIE MAE HEMPHILL

Blues singer and guitarist Jessie Mae Hemphill, 71, July 22 in Memphis. Making her recording debut in 1981 with "She-Wolf," Hemphill went on to win the W.C. Handy Award for best traditional female blues artist in 1987 and 1988. Her sophomore album and first U.S. release "Feelin' Good" won the Handy Award for best acoustic album in 1991.

FLOYD DIXON

Acclaimed jump-blues and R&B pianist/vocalist/songwriter Floyd Dixon, 77, July 26 in Los Angeles. Best-known for the 1954 song "Hey Bartender," Dixon recorded for Supreme Records and Modern Records in the late '40s. He reached No. 4 on The Billboard R&B singles chart in 1951 with "Telephone Blues," and in the next year with "Call Operator," both on Aladdin Records. His album "Wake Up and Live!" won a Blues Foundation Award as comeback album of the year in 1997.

ARTHUR LEE

Singer and guitarist for L.A. rock pioneers Love, Arthur Lee, 61, August 3 in Memphis. Lee formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965 and recorded three albums with the group's original lineup, including 1967's psychedelic classic "Forever Changes." The band was once the leading light of the Los Angeles scene that included the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Doors. Love's early material proved perennially influential, with acts from Led Zeppelin to Echo and the Bunnymen citing Lee as an inspiration.

FREDDY FENDER

Freddy Fender (Baldemar Huerta), 69, October 14 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Fender hit it big in 1975 when "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" climbed to No. 1 on the pop and country charts. "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" rose to No. 1 on the country chart and top 10 on the pop chart that same year. Fender won a best Latin pop album Grammy Award in 2002 for "La Musica de Baldemar Huerta." He also shared in two more Grammys with the Texas Tornados and with Los Super Seven.

SANDY WEST

Sandy West, 47, October 21 in San Dimas, Calif. West was a founding member and the drummer for the '70s rock band the Runaways, which featured fellow rockers Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie. After the band broke up, West continued to perform as a drummer, guitarist and vocalist with the Sandy West Band.

GERALD COOK

Pianist, composer, musical director and arranger Gerald Cook, 85, October 22 in Chicago. He performed with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and in nightclubs, starting out in a duo piano act with Margaret Bonds, then going on to accompany singers and personalities including Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Carmen McRae, Shirley Jones, Johnny Hartman and Sammy Cahn. Cook was the pianist and musical director for Libby Holman's one-woman show, "Blues, Ballads and Sin-Songs," and he helped fuel cabaret/blues singer Alberta Hunter's comeback.

RUDY TAYLOR

Producer and songwriter, Rudy Taylor, 52, October 28 in Baton Rouge, La. Taylor toured with Bobby Womack, for whom he acted as musical arranger. Taylor co-produced, arranged and co-wrote many of the Gap Band hits, including "Oops Upside Your Head," "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" and "Early in the Morning."

GERALD LEVERT

Popular R&B singer Gerald Levert, 40, November 10 in Cleveland. The son of O'Jays lead singer Eddie Levert came to national attention in 1986 as a member of Atlantic Records group Levert, then emerged from his father's shadow to become a well-regarded singer/songwriter and producer in his own right. Topping the R&B and pop charts both with the Atlantic group and in his solo career, Levert released eight solo albums.

TONY SYLVESTER

Tony Sylvester, 66, November 26 in New York. Sylvester was a founding member of the R&B trio Main Ingredient. The group, known for its smooth harmonies, initially recorded on the Red Bird label as the Poets and eventually scored the 1972 No. 2 R&B hit "Everybody Plays the Fool" and two subsequent top 10 R&B chart hits.

MARISKA VERES

Mariska Veres, 59, December 2 in The Hague, Netherlands. Singer for the Dutch group Shocking Blue, Veres started out in 1964 as a vocalist in Les Mysteres. In 1970, the Shocking Blue song "Venus" reached the top of the American music chart; a later cover version by Bananarama topped the chart in 1986 as well. After the Shocking Blue disbanded in 1974, Veres made a number of solo records.

ANITA O'DAY

Jazz vocalist Anita O'Day, 87, November 23 in West Los Angeles. O'Day joined Gene Krupa's band with trumpeter Roy Eldridge in 1941. Her duet with Eldridge, "Let Me Off Uptown," became a million-seller. Striking out solo in the late '40s, she teamed up with drummer John Poole, with whom she played for the next 32 years. She later performed with such musicians as Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington and Thelonious Monk. "Jazz on a Summer Day," a documentary filmed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, made her an international star.

JAMES BROWN

"Godfather of Soul" James Brown, 73, December 25 in Atlanta. His frenetic singing style and bold rhythms brought funk into the mainstream and influenced a new generation of black music, The so-called "hardest-working man in showbusiness" emerged from extreme poverty to send more than 100 singles into the charts, including "Please, Please, Please," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" "Get Up (I feel like being a Sex Machine)" and "It's a Man's World." In later years, he ran afoul of the law, and wound up behind bars on several occasions, but he toured the world constantly, reminding fans of hip-hop music that it all started with him.

Clapton to play concert in Shanghai

Guitarist Eric Clapton is set to play in Shanghai.

Clapton, 61, is scheduled to appear on January 20 at the Shanghai Grand Stage, the same venue where the Rolling Stones made their Chinese debut last April.

Ticket prices for the show run from 1,800 yuan (£120) for stage-side seats to 300 yuan (£20) for the upper balcony.

Western stars from Sir Elton John to the late James Brown and the Black Eyed Peas have played Shanghai over recent months.

The Stones' concert was considered the most lavish and high-profile rock show ever staged in the communist state.

While such appearances point to Shanghai's increasingly affluent and cosmopolitan profile, they also underscore some enduring limitations.

Most of the audience at the concerts have been expatriates because many Chinese remain unfamiliar with such stars or unwilling to pay high ticket prices.

Floyd remember Barrett

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour is to release three new tracks in tribute to former band member and friend Syd Barrett, he has announced.

Gilmour confirmed details of his "Arnold Layne" single on his official website, dedicating the release to Barrett, who died this summer of pancreatic cancer.

The material consists of an acoustic take on "Dark Globe", plus two versions of Pink Floyd's first ever single, "Arnold Layne", all recorded at Gilmour's shows earlier this year at London's Royal Albert Hall.

One features David Bowie on vocals and the other Richard Wright from Pink Floyd. Both tracks were initially written by Barrett.

The songs will all be available to download from Christmas Day but will also be released to shops in December.

Meanwhile, it was revealed last week that Barrett left around £1.2 million to his family in his will. He died in July at the age of 60.

Bono makes surprise appearance at protest concert in Australia (Saturday November 18, 2006 00:45 AM) MELBOURNE (AFP) - Irish rocker Bono made a surprise appearance at a Make Poverty History concert staged in Melbourne to coincide with a meeting of the world's most powerful economic leaders.

The U2 frontman and fellow band member The Edge teamed up with Pearl Jam to perform a rendition of Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" before a 14,000 audience at the open-air concert.

Bono told the crowd to maintain pressure on Group of Twenty (G20) leaders meeting to work to eliminate world poverty at their meeting in Melbourne Saturday and Sunday .

"Politicians all have to do what you tell them to do, scream it from the mountains," he said.
Earlier this month, Bono made another surprise appearance at a Sydney concert by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, who is making a comeback after receiving treatment for breast cancer.

He is in Australia as part of U2's "Vertigo" tour.

Hardy U2 fans get midnight surprise (Friday November 17, 2006 09:49 AM) Hardy U2 fans have been rewarded with exclusive band goodies for queuing at midnight for the supergroup's new album.

HMV in Dublin's Grafton Street was mobbed by a large crowd hoping to get the first copies of U218.
The album is the first single disc collection to span the band's career from 1980 to 2004.

It features top hits from two decades including tracks from their back catalogue of albums from Boy to How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

The first 10 females and the first 10 males in the queue on Thursday night received exclusive U2 merchandise like hoodies and baseball caps.

A HMV store spokesman said : "By opening at midnight we gave fans an opportunity to be the first to get their hands on this album and the opportunity to get their hands on some exclusive merchandise."

Fans visiting the store also had their photographs taken with the famous Macnas U2 heads.

Darkness lead singer Hawkins quits band

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Singer Justin Hawkins has left British glam-revival band the Darkness to continue his drug rehabilitation and work on a solo album, telling the Sun newspaper Wednesday that "it's time for me to move on."

He added: "It would be damaging to my recovery to stay on. I'm not blaming the band for my problem -- I am an addict."

The remaining band members wrote on the Darkness message board (http://www.thedarknessrock.com): "We ... are still in total shock and can't say at this stage what the future holds. You will hear from us, once we know what we want to do."

The group burst onto the worldwide stage with its 2004 debut, "Permission To Land," which has sold 698,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But last year's "One Way Ticket to Hell ... And Back" fizzled here, selling 91,000 copies to date.

In August, Hawkins entered rehab; at the time, the band insisted it would hit the studio as soon as he was well, and it denied rumours that it had been dropped by Atlantic Records.

LONDON (Reuters) - A "new" album of Beatles music mixed by their legendary producer George Martin and described as a new "way of reliving the whole Beatles musical lifespan", will be released in November.

EMI Music and Apple Corps Ltd said on Tuesday that Martin and his son Giles began work on the album, called "Love", after getting permission from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison representing
John Lennon and George Harrison.

The music has already been used as the soundtrack to the theatrical Cirque du Soleil show called "Love".

"This music was designed for the Love show in Las Vegas but in doing so we've created a new Beatles album," George Martin said in a statement.
"The Beatles always looked for other ways of expressing themselves and this is another step forward for them.

"What people will be hearing on the album is a new experience, a way of re-living the whole Beatles musical lifespan in a very condensed period."

The Martins worked from the original master tapes from the Abbey Road studios to produce a medley of Beatles music by remixing favourite songs, such as Harrison's "Within You Without You" being played to the drum-track of "Tomorrow Never Knows."

EMI Music, part of EMI Group Plc, and Apple Corps Ltd., the company that administers The Beatles' interests, said the album would be released world-wide in November. Additional information such as the track listing will be released later.

iPod May Have To Change Its iTunes

APPLE could be forced to share its iTunes technology so that rivals can sell music to iPod owners, it has emerged.

The French parliament has passed a law which aims to tackle claims that its iPod and iTunes systems are operating as an unfair monopoly.

Apple's bestselling MP3 player includes a coding system which means it willl play only songs downloaded through the company's iTunes service for 79p for a track or 7.90 uk pound for an album.

However, the French law would require Apple and other digital music services to volunteer these codes to all MP3 manufacturers. opening the download market to rivals.

Apple and the iPod are believed to have up to 75 per cent of the market in the UK.
