Zeppelin inspire U2

The new U2 album has been inspired by Led Zeppelin and Jack White, the band have revealed.

"No Line On The Horizon" is due for release in March, five years since its predecessor, "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", came out.

The Edge says hooking-up with Jimmy Page and The White Stripes' leader for a recent rock documentary had rubbed-off on his guitar work.

"I was just fascinated with seeing how Jimmy played those riffs so simply, and with Jack as well", he explained.

Meanwhile, singer Bono has revealed that much of the album attempts to address the current global climate and capture "the world at the window".

"No Line On The Horizon" is due out on March 2.

Plans for Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones to hit the road as Led Zeppelin in 2009 have been scrapped - because the rockers can't find a singer to replace Robert Plant.

Just a day after Peter Mensch, a spokesman for Page's management firm, defended the rock duo's plans to tour without their famous frontman, he is now attempting to end the speculation about a semi-reunion by telling Music Radar Led Zeppelin is "completely over”.

Mensch says, "Led Zeppelin are over! If you didn’t see them in 2007, you missed them. It’s done. I can’t be any clearer than that... There are absolutely no plans for them to continue. Zero. Frankly, I wish everybody would stop talking about it.”

Page and Jones were hoping to follow up a reunion show they performed in London at the end of 2007 with new shows, but Plant, who has since found success with musical partner Alison Krauss, had no interest in touring with his former bandmates.

And, despite reports Alter Bridge star Myles Kennedy had been drafted in to replace Plant, Mensch insists all reunion plans have been scrapped.

He reveals the band auditioned singers but "no one worked out”.

Stooges guitarist dies

Ron Asheton, founding member of The Stooges, has died, it has been announced.

According to reports, the original guitarist in the seminal Detroit rock act suffered a heart attack.

He was found at his home in Ann Arbor on Monday evening, with local police speculating his body may have lain undiscovered for a few days.

An autopsy has not yet taken place although there is no suggestion of foul play, Detective Sgt Jim Stephenson told local reporters.

Asheton formed The Stooges with brother Scott, Dave Alexander and Iggy Pop in 1967, with the band going on to become amongst rock's most influential acts.

They reformed in 2003 and were amongst the nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

Gabriel: 'Full Genesis reunion is still possible'

Peter Gabriel has fuelled reports of a full Genesis reunion after telling a music magazine he has "no real objection" to touring with his former bandmates.

Gabriel insists other commitments forced him to step back from a 2007 Genesis reunion, which became a 20-city world tour, but he remains interested in a get together.

The Sledgehammer hitmaker tells Mojo magazine, "In principle I have no real objection to playing with Genesis at some point in the future."

If he does take part in a reunion, it will be the first time he has officially performed with his bandmates since he quit the group in the mid-1970s.

Led Zeppelin will tour without Robert Plant, Jimmy Page's manager has revealed.

The rock legends have been at the centre of constant press speculation in recent months, after their celebrated one-off comeback at the O2 Arena in 2007.

It has now been confirmed that Page, John Paul Johns and Jason Bonham are prepared to go out on the road without their founding singer.

Peter Mensch said the band were ready for the "long and difficult process" of finding a new frontman.

"Jimmy Page has been playing guitar professionally since he was 16 years old", he told the BBC.

"Jimmy Page likes being a musician. That's what he does! He doesn't want to be a race car driver or a solicitor.

"John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page enjoy playing with each other, Jason Bonham is a really good drummer so why not? We just need to find a singer", said Mensch.

Apple to sell copy protection-free songs

Apple has agreed to start selling digital songs without copy protection software from its iTunes store along with over-the-air download songs for its popular iPhone, according to people familiar with its plans.

The maker of the iPod is also set to announce a deal to roll out variable pricing on digital songs at the iTunes Music Store with songs priced between 79 cents (53 pence) and $1.29.

Apple is expected to announce the changes at the Macworld Expo trade show in San Francisco later on Tuesday.

Copy protection software, also known as digital rights management or DRM, has proved a controversial topic with music fans and record labels alike.

DRM was designed to prevent fans from illegally sharing digital downloads on file-sharing services. But it also prevented many fans from moving their own songs between devices and became increasingly unpopular.

Apple's founder, Steve Jobs, publicly called on major record labels to drop DRM in February 2007.

In exchange, labels have been asking that iTunes agree to sell songs at variable prices. Currently, iTunes sells all individual songs at 99 cents regardless of their popularity or date of release, unlike most other retail outlets.

Apple is also expected to announce details to allow iPhone 3G and iPod Touch Wifi users to buy songs while on the go, over the air through its popular App Store.

Music powers mobile evolution

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona LG Electronics announced it will start to sell mobile phones in few months time giving consumers full access to free music via Omnifone's MusicStation download service. LG's first full-access music phone is set to hit the market months ahead of a similar offering from the world's top cellphone maker Nokia, which unveiled its plan to start selling phones with free music access in December last year. Such unlimited download models could offer a shot in the arm to the music industry, which is struggling to find ways to make up for falling CD sales -- something that pay-per-track online stores like Apple's iTunes have so far failed to do. Reuters European Technology Correspondent Matt Cowan reports from Barcelona.

Lennon's MBE unearthed

Fans of John Lennon are calling for his MBE to put on display, forty years after he famously sent it back to the Queen.

The rock legend returned the honour in 1969, in protest at the government's supposed support of the war in Vietnam.

All four members of the band had been rewarded four years earlier for their services to music, at the height of Beatlemania.

It has now been unearthed in its original presentation case with letter, at the Chancery Department of the Royal Household in St James' Palace.

The attached note reads: "Your Majesty, I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against 'Cold Turkey' slipping down the charts. With Love, John Lennon."



A spokesman for Buckingham Palace told a UK newspaper that the honour could go on display only when it has been officially verified.

"John Lennon's MBE is being taken good care of and is in storage at the Central Chancery, St James' Palace", they explained.

"It has been retained since the day Mr Lennon returned it, but in order to decide whether the medal could go on display in a museum, we would have to establish ownership first.

"It could be up to Yoko Ono as she is the custodian of John Lennon's estate", the spokesperson concluded.

"Hallelujah" tops Christmas chart

The top two spots in the Christmas singles chart were taken by covers of Leonard Cohen's 1984 song "Hallelujah," with "X Factor" talent show winner Alexandra Burke's new version beating Jeff Buckley's 1994 cover on Sunday.

Burke won this year's series of the pop talent show that is one of ITV's biggest ratings successes, and she is the fourth successive "X Factor" winner to take the Christmas singles title.

Leona Lewis, who won "The X Factor" and the Christmas number one slot in 2006, dropped down to third from number one last week with "Run," the Official Charts Company said.

Cohen's original version of "Hallelujah" entered the chart at number 36, while the success of Buckley's version was partly due to a campaign on social networking website Facebook among music fans upset at what they saw as the manufactured nature of Burke's career.

Buckley drowned in 1997, and achieved only modest sales though significant critical acclaim during his lifetime.

Reformed 1990s boy band Take That remained at the top of the artist album chart with "The Circus," and Leona Lewis's album "Spirit" stayed at second place.

The mother of cult singer Jeff Buckley is convinced her son would have been amused that music mogul Simon Cowell has given him a boost up the pop charts - years after his death.

Fans of the late rocker, who died in a swimming accident in 1997, are campaigning to take his recording of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah to the top of the charts this Christmas in a bid to beat another cover version of the song by singer Alexandra Burke.

Burke was awarded a £1 million record deal with Syco Records, Cowell's division of Sony BMG, when she took home the crown on Cowell's TV competition The X Factor last week.

But Buckley's mother Mary Guibert insists the tragic star would have loved the music rivalry.

She says, "I think Jeff would have found this number one thing very amusing. It's ironic in so many ways. I mean, here is The X Factor, run by Simon Cowell, who is supposed to be the ultimate taste arbiter, and they've been run to the wire by my son.

"It's come about so organically, with no record label pushing it, and I think Jeff would have loved that, and loved his fans for doing it."

Nobel honours Bono

Bono has been honoured as a 'Man of Peace' at a ceremony in France.

The U2 singer received the commendation from Paris Mayor Bertrand Delance on Friday.

The award was made in the presence of five Nobel Peace Prize winners, in recognition of his efforts to support causes in Africa.

The singer said: "This is a very big award for me, because let's be honest this is as close as I am going to get, as close as a rock star is ever going to get to the Nobel Peace Prize.

"I am an over-awarded, over-rewarded rock star. You are the people who do the real work", he told the laureates at the event.

U2 are expected to release a new album, "No Line On The Horizon", in 2009.

Absolute Radio are getting behind The Sun's campaign to get Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelujah' in the UK singles chart this Christmas. It's been announced that Simon Cowell's X Factor finalist will hit the Crimbo charts with a cover of Leonard Cohen's classic, but it's Buckley's beautiful cover that needs to be heard by a new generation of real music fans.

X Factor is great but it's not about music - it's about entertainment. Hallujah is a brilliant, all time classic song but I know the X Factor version will pail into insignificance compared to the incredibly moving Jeff Buckley version - you need to have had a life to sing this song.

We need to get it the Top 40 so people know there is another 'real' version out there.

AC/DC play Wembley

AC/DC will play a show at Wembley Stadium next summer, in support of new album "Black Ice", they have confirmed.

The rock veterans embark on a UK tour next April, appearing for two gigs at the O2 Arena in London, before the dates continue into Europe.

They have now revealed plans for two further concerts in June, with the second taking place at Hamden Park in Scotland.

The tour follows the release of the band's Grammy-nominated new album, their first in eight years.

Coldplay dismisses plagiarism allegations what do you think?

Rockers Coldplay have hit back at claims their single Viva La Vida ripped-off a track by guitarist Joe Satriani - insisting any similarity is a coincidence.

Satriani filed a lawsuit at Los Angeles federal court last week, claiming the Yellow hitmakers copied segments from his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly to use in their 2008 hit track.

He is seeking damages and profits from Viva La Vida, claiming he was devastated when he first heard the song, saying, "I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much. The second I heard it, I knew it was If I Could Fly."

But the band has responded dismissing the allegations in a statement issued to TMZ.com.

It reads, "With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this, and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay."
